The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is travel’s newest destination, having only recently opened its doors to leisure travelers.
Covering a vast expanse of desert and mountains, the scenery of Saudi will surprise many, particularly the otherworldly rock formations in AlUla. AlUla is also home to Saudi Arabia’s most iconic site; the rock-carved city of Hegra, built by the Nabateans and which has been left practically undisturbed for 2,000 years.
The mud-brick ruins of Diriyah, north of the capital Riyadh, provide a fascinating insight into the origins of the Saud Dynasty. The mountains of the southwest are home to a surprising collection of traditional villages that still evoke echoes of the past, whilst the haunting ruins of Al Ula provide a chance to explore one of the most impressive ghost towns anywhere in the Middle East.
Add to that the lively city of Jeddah, with its ancient wooden buildings and varied culture owing to its history on a number of important trade routes, and you have a destination that offers endless possibilities to the adventure traveler.
